11 minutes of tear gas and gunfire

We expected today to be a busy one. Zelaya claimed he was returning and large protests in support of Zelaya and against the coup were planned. Alfredo and I gathered our things and headed to meet the protestors from the start. We were there to support the other two reporters who were doing liveshots from the airport and the presidential palace. We were there to shoot and gather elements for their reporting.

The started of peacefully with music with a crow of about 20-25,000. It grew as it headed along to the airport. Alfredo and I broke off at the midpoint to send video back to Washington. We caught up to the protest about an hour and a half later. The police were blocking the entrance to the airport where Zelaya was to land at 4p or so. They moved on to where they could see the runaway at the far end of the airport. We shot video of protestors taunting the soldiers who were about 75 yards beyond a fence which surrounded the airport. I told Alfredo I would run the tape back so they could feed it and took off.

On my way back I saw two people running back towards where I had been. As I got closer I heard several pops and saw people running and screaming. At least one person had been shot and he was being loaded onto a truck. There was blood on the ground, chaos.
