The Negotiations

So on Tuesday we get word we have to be in Costa Rica the next day. We were driving back from the funeral of the boy who had been shot. The entire town of 400 people came out for the funeral in the little village in the mountains about 3 hours from the Honduran capitol Tegucigalpa. At his request, we showed the father of the boy the video we had filmed. He wept as the gunfire began.
We were to meet a correspondent from Sao Paolo, Brazil –yes, crazy how AJE sends people from everywhere to everywhere. He had managed to get himself to Costa Rica and now it was our turn. The airport was closed in Tegucigalpa which meant we had to drive yet another three hours to San Pedro Sula to fly oout. Brutal. Seven hours in the car on Tuesday then 5 1/2 hours (there was construction and ridiculous detours through mountain villages) on Wednesday and then 3 hours of air travel made for very tired Silvio and Alfredo.

But here we are. And you’d think it would get easier? We worked 16 hours yesterday. 11 days, 16 hours a day…but we’re still fired up.
